Size Matters

What's on the inside of your mattress is equally as important as the size of the mattress. Modern mattresses usually contain either an innerspring core or materials such as latex, viscoelastic, or other polyurethane-type foams. They may also be filled with air or water. But what's best for you and just what is "viscoelastic foam"? Two main types of mattresses are:
- Spring mattress core, often called "innersprings," are made up of steel coil springs, or "coils." Innerspring (coil) design, gauge (thickness) of wire, number of turns, metal composition and tempering all contribute to the potential of a particular innerspring.
- Foam mattresses use latex foam or viscoelastic memory foam instead of springs to provide support.
The Foundation
Is your current mattress on the floor or on an old squeaky boxspring? If you're buying a new mattress, it makes sense to buy a new foundation at the same time. All foundations are not correct for all mattresses. Newer and heavier foam type mattresses require support different than an innerspring mattress. The proper foundation extends the life of your mattress and adds to the overall support and comfort. Many manufacturers void product warranty if a mattress is not supported by an appropriate foundation. The three main types of foundations are:
- Box-springs are made of a rigid frame with extra-heavy-duty springs. This type of foundation contributes to softer support and a bouncier mattress
- Wood foundations typically consist of seven or eight support slats and increase the feeling of firmness and stability
- Grid foundations are a combination of wood and steel
One shape does not fit all
Your choice in mattress and bed type is highly individual based on your personal comfort level.
